How the safety score works

Every platform gets a score out of 10 from six criteria, weighted by how much each one protects your money. The inputs are published facts — licences, years of operation, documented incidents, what the platform discloses — so the same facts always produce the same score.

7.5 and above: strong · 6.0 to 7.4: fair · below 6.0: weak

The score is our assessment under this method. It does not guarantee that a platform is safe or that you will get your money back.

Read the full methodology

  1. Regulation

    30%

Decides what happens to your uninvested cash if the platform fails. An investment firm licence outranks a crowdfunding licence because it brings client-money segregation and, usually, a compensation scheme.

  2. Track record

    25%

Years of operation with diminishing returns, minus documented incidents. A penalty is halved once investors were made whole — a platform that hit trouble and repaid has proved something an untested one has not.

  3. Transparency

    15%

Counts five things a platform can show you: audited accounts, loan-level data, originator detail, recovery figures, and a publicly listed parent.

  4. Liquidity

    15%

Whether you can get out, how fast and at what cost. A platform that has frozen withdrawals before loses two points, because it can do it again.

  5. Diversification

    10%

How many independent balance sheets stand behind the loans. A buyback from a single group is one insolvency away from worthless.

  6. Yield sanity

    5%

The penalty dimension. Full marks at or below 10%, falling to 3 at 16% and above.

Before you invest a single euro

P2P lending is not a savings account. Loan originators default, buyback guarantees are only as good as the company behind them, and platforms have frozen withdrawals with no notice. Capital invested in P2P loans is not covered by any deposit guarantee scheme.

What our figures can and cannot tell you

  • Figures come from each platform's own pages. We link the source and show the date we read it, which is not necessarily when the platform published it. We do not audit platforms or their loan books.
  • Scores rest on published information, not on our own investment results.
  • A high score means fewer known weaknesses, not that your money is safe. Past returns do not predict future returns.

How returns are labelled

platform average
An average the platform publishes, usually the interest rate across its loans.
advertised maximum
The highest rate the platform advertises. Most investors earn less.
target rate, not guaranteed
What the platform aims to pay. A goal, not a result.

None of these is what investors actually kept after defaults, fees and tax.

Some links are partner links, marked with an arrow. If you open an account through one, we may earn a commission at no cost to you. Commission is not an input to the score — only the six criteria above are — and no platform can pay to change its score, its wording or a warning.
